Why don't you just get one from a junk yard or ebay? I ve gotten one for 20 bucks out of a yard. I was only after the temp gauge. You could do the swap on a temporary basis to pass and then return the car to stock condition.

considering importing an '88 Canadian M5 to US that meets all DOT and EPA guidelines per BMW except for the speedo which is a metric unit. To meet US guidelines it will have to be changed out for english unit. does anyone have experience with this conversion and can I get a speedo head from a mid to late 80's 535i to make the switch? Thanks for input....

Your local BMW dealer can change this speedo head out for a BRAND NEW one for around $375.---$400.
