I think the typical labor charge is 20 hours. And of course that assumes you have the right tools and experience. Take a look at this link that details the rebuild of an E34 M5 engine. Scares the crap out of me. It's one thing if you could just get a replacement engine for $1000 if you screwed it up... the consequences of %#$@ing it up are too great IMHO. I would leave it to an expert.
It doesn't need it, but it would be nice to know when it does.
That is not at all excessive even for an experianced professional. For the DYI'er double or triple it!! No kidding. If you fail to do it correctly you will destroy the engine and/or $10K in parts!!
