I've done it and anyone who can do it in 20 hours is talented, particularly since you have to take your time and label everything unless your a genius with a photographic memory. Everything is piled on top of/attached to the head: Intake plenum, three pairs of throttle bodies, three intake manifolds, fuel rails, fuel regulator, idle valve, distributor, cam box separately carrying camshafts on top of head, exhaust headers, water pump, thermostadt. By the time you strip it all off the engine is 90% removed and there's this little block in the bottom of the compartment. When you put it in perspective 20 hours seems right for someone with a lot of experience, if nothing else needs to be addressed.

I think the typical labor charge is 20 hours. And of course that assumes you have the right tools and experience. Take a look at this link that details the rebuild of an E34 M5 engine. Scares the crap out of me. It's one thing if you could just get a replacement engine for $1000 if you screwed it up... the consequences of %#$@ing it up are too great IMHO. I would leave it to an expert.

It doesn't need it, but it would be nice to know when it does.
