You know the head is 2 pieces? You know there are 6 throttle bodies? You can't compare the non-M engines with an S38.

I've watched an S38 head gasket replacement, done by a professional BMW-trained mechanic, and it was an arduous task even for him. Just torquing the head bolts was a major deal.

I could be wrong, I was quoted that once by a decent shop. The standard labor charge for a non-M engine is 12 hours afaik to pull and reattach head. Should an M engine be 8 hours more? I agree it sounds excessive.
