Believe it. Took that long to take it off but I'm a novice. While I had the head off and getting fixed I thought I'd look at the bottom end...Just fix the head gasket and put it back together (when it needs it) I'm towing mine 700 miles to someone who will not rip me off putting it all back together :)

I could be wrong, I was quoted that once by a decent shop. The standard labor charge for a non-M engine is 12 hours afaik to pull and reattach head. Should an M engine be 8 hours more? I agree it sounds excessive.

I think the typical labor charge is 20 hours. And of course that assumes you have the right tools and experience. Take a look at this link that details the rebuild of an E34 M5 engine. Scares the crap out of me. It's one thing if you could just get a replacement engine for $1000 if you screwed it up... the consequences of %#$@ing it up are too great IMHO. I would leave it to an expert.


It doesn't need it, but it would be nice to know when it does.
