Timing chain, sprockets, guides gaskets etc - circa £1,500 fitted in the UK. Don't do this and the chain could break. This will write off the car.
Sloppy gear change - simple to solve it's just a joint in the gearshift linkage.
ABS working - watch for corrosion in the rear abs hubs.
Idle good (900-100 rpm warm) - could be a whole host of things.
Smoking from cold - valve stem seals - cheap to replace for parts but you have to take the head off - expensive
Front suspension struts and bushes - 90k miles it's about time to change most of these. Cheap to do though if you do it yourself.
etc etc
Best of luck

I'm looking at an '88 with around 90K, good shape except for the rear suspension. I know there are some issues that ought to be addressed soon if this were a 4-cyl M engine (intake gaskets, cam chain, etc). Do the sixes have the same problems? What else should I be looking for?
Thanks.
