David:

The high-cost items on the car are the engine, tranny and interior. The latter two are easy to check. The former will need the chain work and hoses and belts. Be sure to have the engine checked out comprehensively - compression is most important.

The intake gaskets do not leak as much on these cars since they do not vibrate as much as the S14 and because the plenum is more rigidly anchored to the block, but it is cheap and easy to replace them while doing hoses so why not.

I'm looking at an '88 with around 90K, good shape except for the rear suspension. I know there are some issues that ought to be addressed soon if this were a 4-cyl M engine (intake gaskets, cam chain, etc). Do the sixes have the same problems? What else should I be looking for?

Thanks.
