This occured in my old 535is. Todd is correct, it is most likely plastic end piece on the throttle cable that has pulled out of the cable itself and is preventing the cable from sliding back to rest position when you take your foot off the gas.
Todd, I'm at work but is that something I could fix with WD-40 right now?
I should have also stated that once it happened it continued acting up.
Your throttle cable or the throttle flap itself is probably getting stuck.
Hi guys. I'm reposting this from E34 board becuse I know there are good techs over here. Thanks for any help you can give me with my problem(93 525i auto).
Car started and ran fine then 1/2 hour into my commute the idle jump WAY up. At a stop light with car in drive it had a reading of 1300, rock steady. BUT if I shifted up to neutral or park WHAM -2500 RPM! You can imagine what the tranny sounded like when I shifted back to drive. It is time for inspection II but nothing else was needed or known to be wrong.
(I just remembered something else. When I was driving down the highway and lifted up the gas, the car continued on as if in cruise control. It made me think my floor mats had slid up onto the gas pedal. No such luck :)
Please help,
Michael
