It is fantastic in the sense that the car revs _very_ fast with no load. Other theorize that at low rpms, a lightened flywheel adds 5-20 hp or some such nonsense. I frankly dont care, for me, it has made driving so much more involving. Shifting is much crisper in both directions, and the driver must be faster and more precise with shifts. The benefit is that for double clutching work and heel n toe (which i do everytime i drive - on the street, in the rain, whenever!) the throttle blips to match revs are instantaneous. My downshift from 4th -> 3rd is more like a continuous motion than a 4th->N->3rd because the rev and clutch work is so much faster now.
Its a ~$500 part. The big issue is separating the motor from the tranny to do it. But if you're already doing engine work an dhave it out of the car, the lightened flywheel is an absolute no brainer. Again, I love it just for the pure drivability characteristics change. It makes the ///M experience even more involving and exhilerating than it already is.
Matt, can you tell me a bit about your lightweight flywheel? My engine is being rebuilt this winter and I'm looking for easy bolt on uprades. What did it get you in performance. Are there other mods needed to use the new flywheel?
Thanks,
Michael
BTW - My idle speed was perfect for the ride home. No problem at all. Go figure.
My warm idle speed is about 650-700 rpm.
I have a lightweight flywheel.
I am getting the impression that the warm idle should be 950. Thus, i have a _very_ low warm idle.
My cold idle is around 1100.
Do you suppose its the flywheel doing this ? Or should I look to something else ?
Thanks,
Matt
