intermittent heater (archive)

I searched the archives but found nothing conclusive.
My heater is mostly inop, it worked yesterday morning after I took some console panels off to check on squeaky pedals. I understand there is a sensor to the left of the hump that will cause the heater not to work.
Today I ran the temp control knob with a cold engine and I could hear whatever it controls cycling.
What else should I check before I take things apart.

TIA
Miguel
