I've owned both (still have the M5), with kids. Unless your spouse is extremely understanding, it's not likely that the M5 will cut it. There's just not enough room. We've got an e39 540i, and with two kids it's cramped. The 750iL's long wheelbase allows you to actually get in the car to do things, such as change diapers, etc.

The 750 is quite costly to repair, but proper maintenance goes a long way here, no different than with the M5. The 5.0l V12 is bulletproof, it's all the little stuff around it that runs your repair bills up. Spend a good $5K up-front to fix any outstanding issues, and replace any hoses and belts, then spring for the Dinan transmission cooler. You'll love it! :-)

Oh, one other note---make sure you try your car seats in the 7er before buying, some of them just can't 'stick' properly in the angled seat cushion.
