Matt:

It is possible to rebulid the caliper. Here are the gotchas:

1. You cannot separate the halves as they are held together by torque-to-yield bolts that you cannot buy separately. I suppose you could from the base spec as a bolt is a bolt, but I could not find them.

2. During the rebuild, you cannot use brake cleaner to clean the caliper as this would adversely affect the seals between the two halves. You cannot replace the seals. See 1. This means you have to either be supercareful about sanding the gunk off (plug the holes, etc.) or you cannot do this or you just risk brake cleaner. Not good options!

3. Since the caliper is dual-piston, once you have one piston out you cannot pressurize the other piston with compressed air. I had to meddle with capping the first bore off and so on to build pressure on the other side. It is a touchy thing with you having to hold the first piston in w/o jamming it while pressure builds and pops the other one out. It can be done, but it is not going to be a 30-min rebuild like on a one-piston car.

Like I said, it can be done, but you really need to know what you are doing. If you find all the parts and seals that you should replace I'd be interested in hearing of your experience.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this board, but I was wondering if you could give me some help. I just looked at an 88 M5 today with about 110000 miles on it, needs some body work, etc., but the right front caliper has seized up. I was wondering if it would be possible to rebuild this, and if so how much work is involved. I could always buy a rebuilt or new caliper, but I for now I would prefer just to rebuild it myself. Also, if you could tell me anything that I should look at for, any common mechanical problems, rust areas, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

Matt
