Ethan:

I went through the same thing on my 88 iS:

1. The bumper is cheap used. Just replace it. Examine the shocks when you have the bumper off. Mild hits it can recover from, but higher impacts will permanently crush it. Again, cheap used.

2. The airdam is a $600 part, but if it is cracked you can repair it with epoxy and such and respray it. I did that with my 88 iS bumper and you cannot tell. It is rare used, but the 535iS used it too so maybe not impossible to find.

3. Tire and alignment are easy. If there has been any frame bending (unlikely) some tweaking at an alignment shop with a frame machine should fix it. I had that done about 25k miles ago and my car is still fine in that department.

4. It is too late to do anything now, but this is exactly why a car should not be parked in gear. It is entirely possible the tranny took damage. There is only one way to find out. If there are broken pieces in there driving around like that will only damage it further as the pieces chew up other gears. Parking in gear on inclines can also bleed the tensioner and damage the engine.

5. Look for torn bushings and mounts.

Too bad about it being a friend. Bet he feels like crap, but at least you'll have some help with the work. Or, you can just dump it on insurance and split the deductible?

Fortunately, there is no body damage that I can see, but, the front bumper took a pretty bad hit. To start, the bumper is nicely twisted, the left front bumper end is toast, as well as the associated marker light (I replaced that bulb yesterday), bumper end mounting hardware, and last, but not least, the air dam is hangin' low on the left.

What I'm worried about is the possibility that the obligatory 5 MPH bumper shock mounts might be bent. Also, my left front rim is bent, the tire is sliced and the allignement is out!

The strange thing is (and the most upsetting), now my tranny seems to be making a whurrrring sound. Is it possible, since the car was in 1st, that something got screwed up from the impact?

Questions:

*Does anyone know a good body shop in the Bay Area?

*Can anyone think of anything else I should look for...?

*How about a good mechanic? I'll need to have that tranny looked at. A rebuild on a Getrag 280 costs $3,000! Maybe the insurance company will total her... NO! Just my inner dialogue speaking. You all understand.

Here is the clincher - the car was parked and the person who hit me is a good friend.

Any advice would help,
Ethan (formerly undamaged e28 M5) Turner
