I have had this happen on another BMW that I own. The car sat for a long time, the cam rusted and then I cleaned off the rust.

Unfortunately, the rust ruined the cam. The cam was no longer hardened and the lobes wore off in a matter of a few weeks.

Maybe hard to believe but true.
