Yeros, first The 1988 and up U.S.3.5l is 208hp the euro is 218 hp.

Actually it's not. The E34, E32 and late model E24 used the same (code: M30 B35) 208 bhp rated engine. It is a "world" engine, and the reason BMW did this was ease of manufacturing as their previous B34 series came with kat and non-kat versions.

1985 till 1987 is 182 hp. 3.5l. for U.S. market

This B34 engine came with a high compression and low compression version. The 10:1, euro only, non-kat equipped version had 218 bhp.

The 8:1, low compression, kat equipped version was the only one available in the US, but was avail elsewhere in europe as well. This made 182 bhp SAE.

The 3.5 liter 2 valve lineage goes something like this:

3453cc, 93.4mm/84mm, 9.3:1 compression ratio, L-jet equipped. 218 bhp/224 lb-ft. Application to: E12 M535i, E24 635CSi (until '83), E23 735i (until '82/83 can't remember for certain). Also known inaccurately as M90.

3430cc, 92mm/86mm, 10:1 and 8:1 compression, M30 B34 engine code, Motronic equipped. Low compression had 182 bhp SAE / 214 lb-ft (8:1, kat, emissions equipment), and High compression version had 218 bhp / 229 lb-ft (10:1, no kat, no emissions). E24 635CSi ('84-'87 - i don't know the exact build date changeover off hand), E28 535i/M535i, E23 735i (from '83ish on, again don't know build date changeover off hand), E23 745i Motronic used the low compression engine plus turbo. The earlier 745i used the 3.2 liter with lower compression pistons.

3430cc, 92mm/86mm, 9.0:1 and 9.3:1 compression, M30 B35 engine code, Motronic 1.3 equipped. 9.0:1 engine was "world engine" with 208 bhp / 225 lb ft of torque. Some 9.3:1 pistons are available and were made for certain markets. Don't remember off hand which and where and why and when, but it's in the euro ETK.

Next engine mounts are different.

This is the case dependent upon cars. In the US, the B35 engine was used in the E24 (as well as the E34 and E32 which uses more forward mounts for the engine), thus can fit in E28s with the correct engine mounts. But the B34 engine (E24 and E28) needs to have their engine mounts changed to fit in the E9. It may be easier to mate up the B35 engine that mounts on E34/E32 (as the mounts are farther forward than E24/E28, which is what is required to do for the E9).

As for the rubber engine mounts, most of them are interchangeable, and you can find good ones from a newer car that will fit well.

The 286 hp is a double overhead cam 24valves engine. Possible same block as Euro 218 hp. Change to carb set up out of the question. It is set up with ECU for injection and runs well. Anything is possible, but the work involed is a nightmare both mentally and cash wise.
Keith

The M5/M6 S38 or M88 engine. S38 usually designates the USA version, M88 the euro version. The USA version had 256 bhp at 9.8:1 compression. The euro version had 286 bhp at 10.5:1 compression.

The blocks cannot be interchanged. The head mounts entirely differently.

The B34/B35 engines have 92mm/86mm bore/stroke. They also have different pistons due to different head designs and different compression ratios.

The early 3453cc 3.5 liter engine uses 93.4mm/84mm bore/stroke, same as the M5/M6. However, the blocks are not interchangeable, NOR are the heads. Only the later 2 valve B35/B34 head is interchangeable on the earlier 3453cc engine, but you'll change the compression ratios by using the B35 head. The B34 head is effectively the same.
