This is the setup on my M. It is perfect. I would try to look for this kit.

i've always wondered if the tach w/ oil temp gauge from an e34 M5 will fit in our e28 cluster. wondering why bmw cheated the e28 M5 when the standard e28 already has the cutout for the mpg gauge. heck even the e30 M3 got it. anyone done this upgrade? thanks - jeff h
