Don't want to spend the big bucks rebuilding my 280 yet. So, which would be a better transplant into my e28 M5 and what other parts will I need?

The close ratios you find in a junkyard all need new bearings or worse. The E30 M3 close ratio tranny can be easily upgraded with Group-N bearings to withstand track use. With the torque thah the M5 puts out, I wou;dn't be suprised if you wear out a Euro CR tranny in a hurry.

The 265 is a much better alternative for price, but they are few and far between. Most are for sale on the E30 M3 board, because US owners "upgrade" to the Euro CR tranny. About $1200 for a used CR, $600 for a used 265. You may need a new driveshaft with the 265, and you will need the correct shifter from a 1985 (ONLY) US 535i or 635CSi.
