I haven't seen that VIN posting, but as an original owner of an 88 which i still have... here are the facts...
all US spec M5s designated model year 1988.
all bodies have manufacturing dates in '87.
first batch VINs ran from 2791000.
second and final batch were 287xxxx to 2875370.

In '87 BMW ran an add saying something like "only 500 will be available this year"
That was the basis for the consumer class action suit filed in Illinois. Settlement was a certificate worth $4000 discount toward purchase of certain new BMW models to each original purchaser of an '88. The certificates were transferrable so many of us sold them.
The actual number 88 M5s sold in the US was i think 1236, and it did take a couple years to deplete the supply and they did sell discounted to the low 30's for those who waited 'til 89 to buy.
they were all black, most with natur interiors, some, 80 or so, with black interiors.
