Sam:

Since the 520i is not available in the US I'm sure you'll have to provide more information for a fix.

1. Does your car have an idle control valve? Clean this and use dry lube on it. See if that helps.

2. Did you check for intake vacuum leaks? Spray brake cleaner around the intake (carefully) and see if the RPM changes.

3. Is the coolant temp OK? If the thermostat has failed in the open position the engine temp sensor gets fluctuating signals from burst of hot coolant.

4. I've heard a failed O2 sensor can do this as well.

Dear Sir
I found a problem in my E28 520i.
When the water temp is warm(maybe 90*C),R.P.M.is800.
In neutral gear.
If I add the fuel make R.P.M.up,after I let the gas pedal off,
the R.P.M. will go down to 500 then it will up to 800.
I`m afraid of my car going to stop engine.
I try to turn on my C.O. cap almost 5 circle, the problem will be better then before.
I think it is not a good way to solve my problem.
Do you have any idea?
thanks!
