BMW used different gear knob's with different styles for the E28 M5.

The US version probably all have the later version which fit's the hand perfectly.

My 1985 E28 ///M5 have the older "round" style with the M logo in it. I also have the newer style with the M logo as a spare part, but will not use it since it is not the same as the one I have.
