Out of the 2,145 total E28 M5 production, 1,370 examples were built to North American (United States/ Canada) specs, and just 1,236 examples were destined for the United States. All U.S. and Canadian spec cars were painted Schwartz (086) U.S. spec cars were fitted exclusively with Natur leather upholstery. Canadian customers were given the option of black leather, though a handful of examples fitted with black leather were rumored to have been given to the U.S. market. Because the involved research is incomplete, estimates suggest that no more than 50 examples were imported.
