Dave,
sounds like your input shaft bearing is unhappy. If there are no other problems with your tranny, then replace the bearing and the seals. This would require removal of the transmission, which means clutch replacement. If you suspect other problems, to rebuild a Getrag 280 costs between $2k & $3k, depending on whom you talk to. And also, I hear that there are only a few people in the US that are qualified to do it.

I've had the same problem as you describe for nearly two months and 10 people have told me 10 different scenarios about what may or may not happen if I keep driving the car. I also (briefly) had another M with the same problem. Considering my transmission whines in just about every gear and feels kind of clunky, I've decided to drive it for another couple of months and then replace it with a lower mileage 280. I like the way the 280 feels.

Other options are: Getrag 265, Getrag 262, or a Dog-Leg. It sounds like most people go with the 265... that is- People who don't want to spend the extra few thousand $ to rebuild or find one used ("used" is obviously a gamble and requires some trust in the human race).

There is a guy named Dave Hall here on the board who is selling a 280 for around $2k. His email is: dhall5@socal.rr.com. He sounds like an honest guy.

Good Luck,
Ethan

I have a whine when I'm out of gear with the clutch out. When I push the clutch in the whine disappears. It shifts easy and runs great. Thoughts welcome. I own an '88M6, but I think the trannys are the same. TIA
