That all makes sense and does help.

I don't plan on spraying (black paint scairs me), but do plan on doing the prep work. I have some experiance with two part epoxy primers and do plan to use it, the last time I primered bare metal I used a DuPont product. Which brand would you recommend?

Thanks Bryan-

if it is sold in CA you are ok, just don't get caught spraying it at home! but seiously if you want to do it yourself(not recommended)i would'nt use DuPont, Sikkens is great but very hard to use, i even had trouble getting used to it when i used it.PPG is a good choice as it is what i used most.i would recommend a DIY use sherwin williams/martin senour. it is very user friendly and much more forgiving.but i'd get it done professionaly,if you prep yourself and then take it to get sprayed, it would cost you just about the same, buying paint and all the materials required to do a car is expensive, and you end up with alot of leftover material, weigh the cost before jumping in.and as far as primer is concerned, make sure you use a self etching or epoxy primer on the bare metal. then use a nice urethane primer on your body work and repair areas.hope this helps.
