try to stick with one brand through the whole process, that kind of eliminates mating problems.without seeing the current condition of the car its hard to advise, but i will assume it is in good condition and also i don't know of your previous experience.do not strip any good paint off the car,if the paint is ok it is better to leave it on.key is do not sand your bodywork without using a block ,get a nice rubber block.now for issues of product. i like PPG products, it is what i have used the most and know the product line pretty well.i do not use DuPont,i dont like the results and have had too many technical problems with it.Sikkens is also a great product.i have also used Martin Senour/Sherwin Wiliiams in the past with sucess.i am sure you'll find conflicting opinions on brand. as for which kind of primer to use this is my recommendation. use a self etching primer(for bare metal) that is available in a spray can. i know it is available through PPG,Martin Senour and ICI.this will save you some $$ and eliminates extra product sitting around that you don't need.as for filling primer use a urethane primer.ask for recommendations from your supplier once you figure out which brand suits you.hope this helpsBryan in DE

That all makes sense and does help.
I don't plan on spraying (black paint scairs me), but do plan on doing the prep work. I have some experiance with two part epoxy primers and do plan to use it, the last time I primered bare metal I used a DuPont product. Which brand would you recommend?
Thanks Bryan-
if it is sold in CA you are ok, just don't get caught spraying it at home! but seiously if you want to do it yourself(not recommended)i would'nt use DuPont, Sikkens is great but very hard to use, i even had trouble getting used to it when i used it.PPG is a good choice as it is what i used most.i would recommend a DIY use sherwin williams/martin senour. it is very user friendly and much more forgiving.but i'd get it done professionaly,if you prep yourself and then take it to get sprayed, it would cost you just about the same, buying paint and all the materials required to do a car is expensive, and you end up with alot of leftover material, weigh the cost before jumping in.and as far as primer is concerned, make sure you use a self etching or epoxy primer on the bare metal. then use a nice urethane primer on your body work and repair areas.hope this helps.
