James:

I'm not sure I agree with you about the HFM being the source of the gains on the B36. I suspect intake tuning, exhaust tuning, compression increase, larger intake valves, etc., contribute in equal measure. If you look at the B36 vs B38 you see how much stuff it takes to go from 311 to 340 HP and how many things come together to make this happen. I suspect the B35 to B36 was similar.

Also, I've heard about the SS unit not developing the promised power even with the engine on dyno (not chassis) and so on. Smoother idle certainly, which is easily done via increased idle speed, but not much more. It seems to be counterintuitive, but I'm not sure how accurate you can get without writing a custom chip. Do you have concrete dyno info to the contrary?

It's also worth noting that the E34 M5 only has 0.1L more displacement, slightly bigger cams (nothing major), 10.5:1 compression vs our 9.8:1, a few intake and exhaust changes, and an Air MAss Meter as standard equipment. It makes 59HP MORE than the E28 M5 in 100% stock trim. I feel that most of this gain comes from the AMM vs the old AFM.
