Sloth, in answer to your queries:

1) I did not loosen the engine mounts or "center tie rod" when I removed my xmssn. If I recall, I may have loosened the swaybar but this was not to get at the bolts, it was a clearance issue in dropping the xmssn once the bolts were removed.
2)You can leave the shift lever in the car. Drop the rear of the xmssn slightly to gain access to the retaining clip ("guide pin" on the parts fiche) for the shifting arm. The clip rotates up off the fin on the xmssn, thus allowing the integral retaining pin to be withdrawn sideways. If you end up removing the shift lever, I believe the plastic bearing rotates 90 degrees to release. BMW specs a special tool for this. BMW also makes a tool for reinstalling the shift boot in the body sheet metal that really helps (two plastic rings joined at one tangent).
3) Get at all of the bell housing bolts from below. You will need flex (or universal) torx sockets (E10 and E12) and long extenders to get at these. I tried from the top with a torx wrench with absolutely no luck. I also tried with standard torx sockets and a universal joint with no luck -- there just isn't enough clearance for the top bolts. Snap On part numbers at the time for 3/8 inch drive flex torx sockets were FSE100 and FSE120, about $30 each. It was very hard to get my hands on these bolt heads reaching from the bottom but eventually I was able to lying on my back beneath the car up on 8 inch blocks. It helps to have a picture so you know you got all the bolts out. One M10x75 torx bolt (E12) on the bell housing top is on a relatively tall boss. My notes say 11 bolts total joining the xmssn to the engine but don't quote me on this.

Hope this helps. It is a doable job. Do you intend to disassemble your xmssn to see why it is barking? Joe

My transmission is barking ...
