Also, It is my understanding is that aluminun is proportionately stiffer than mild steel, but everyone seems to have an opinion about which is better for a stress bar. I have the BMP, so maybe I'll just try it, but then I can't return it.

The brace is more properly called a tie as it works in tension and not in compression.
Since it works in tension and the tensile strength of steel is quite high, the wimpy brace should be quite sufficient. I do like the look for the Eiback brace more though.
