I did _exactly_ this. I went agro and busted a 2x2" hole in my pan. i had a friend in town that had a pan on his parts car. I let the car coast down to the end of the ramp and parked it in a hardees parking lot. i had the friend bring me the pan. i had my jack, jackstands, wheel chocks, and toolbox in the trunk.
i jacked the car up, put in the jackstands. then used the jack to jake the motor.. think i might has pushed on the flywheel pully ?
it is as steve describes - you need to loosen the subframe bolts. i was scared of what would happen if i let them all the way out. on the E12, the front sway bar is wedged between the subframe and the frame, so you have to loosen the front bolts enough to get the sway bar out, this includes also disconnecting the sway barlinks. there is no way you are getting the pan out with the sway bar still in the car.
once you've got that, you'll want to jack the motorup. i had mine jacked up enough that i needed to loosen the motor mounts. then i cleared the motormounts, engine resting entirely on trans/jack.
the bolts at the back of the oil pan on the M30 are a PITA. All this was done at night in the light of a parking lot, with a maglite, so obviously there are better conditions to do this that make it easier, but it is hard to get a socket onto those bolts. I jacked the engine up even more to try and create a shear between the motor and transmission to make clearance to get my socket+extension up on these bolts.
btw, i didn't replace the gasket.. just swapped the pan :)
i did not need to remove the oil pump.
The short answer is ys..it is pretty sstraight forward wiht a lift..suspend the engine and loosen the 4 subframe bolts, remove engine mount bolts...support the subframe and let it down low enough to clear the oil pan..you may have to remove the oil pump to clear the baffles in the pan
