I just had my windshield replaced at Safelight auto glass. The technician said it was a bitch! I supplied the gasket, new locking strips, and aluminum corner bits. He supplied the glass and labor- I forget exactly what I paid for the front gasket and locking strips... less than $100. (I also replaced the rear window gasket and locking strips). Safelight charged me $204. for glass and labor (for the windshield- Does not include rear window). The job took him about 7 hours, but he did both the windshield and rear window glass. For a total cost of $275. He lost money on the job. When I picked the car up, he said the next time an e28 came in, he would charge a lot more.

The gasket is glued to the windsheild and then the windshield and gasket are glued to the car. They use lots of special caulking that always remains gooey and is specially designed to adhere to glass, rubber, paint and steel. The tech told me that they don't use sillicone because it attracts water and expands and contracts at a different rate than rubber, where as his special gooey stuff would move with the rubber, glass, paint and body in unison.

I didn't realize how pitted my windshield was until I picked up the car and drove it home- My interior is now dry as a bone, no more wet floor.

so i am reasonably confident that my leak is the windshield gasket.

i also have a minor chip in my windshield.

what sort of cost am i looking at to get it fixed ? what about parts ? is this a DIY job ?
