It's tuned to be the quietest, and you won't notice any peaks or dips in the torque curve. Aftermarket mufflers are not tuned as well over the entire rev range.

For the money, the best upgrade is to get rid of the air flow meter and replace it with a air mass meter. Split Second's kit is $1000 and requires tuning to get it right, but it has shown great low and mid-range torue improvements for many different engines--S14, S38, M30, M20, etc. It allows better breathing on the intake, which is what these engines need.

A muffler alone will run about $700 new. Metric Mechanic has an entire exhaust setup for $1200, but MM's power claims are disputable from what I've read.
