Talk to James Clay and Barry Battle of bimmerworld, sponsors of the E30 M3 Special Interest Group email list. You are a member, aren't you? They are best at cages and suspension setups. James can also locate a complete 3.8L Euro engine with accessories, about $7-9k. Instant 340HP and lots of torque, more with a Jim C chip. The E28 M5 engine needs the bigger crank, pistons, headwork, cams, bored throttles, headers, and an air mass meter in place of the restrictive AFM to get anywhere near that kind of power. That would cost much more than any used Euro 3.8L engine.

Also, talk to Mike Yaskin of Bavarian Specialties in PA, (610) 277-6037. He campaigns an E28 M5 sucessfully in BMW CCA Club Racing. He has a built 3.8L E34 M5 engine with around 400HP.

Get the transmission rebuilt by Jim Blanton (jblanton@sky.net) for $2500. The original sychros don't last. Use either a 75% LSD or Quaife diff if you don't lift the inside rear tire. Blanton or Brett Anderson (www.koalamotorsport.com) can do the diff.

I would guess the most important thing would be chassis/suspension setup. It's an older car that was never a racecar. Good luck, and let us know how you're doing.

Thanks James for the detailed suggestions and contacts. Much appreciated,
