I was told by someone that those tabs are welded to the batteries and are too tough to remove. I would suggest either buying batteries with the tabs already in place or wiring in a standard Radio Shack battery holder with rechargables in it to the board.

I've been trying to get these batteries out but can't seem to get the solder hot enough for them to let go. I heated these posts up to the point at which the batteries started to melt !

Since then I've removed them by heating up the attachment point on the back of the board but I still need to get the little metal plates off the batteries to install the new ones.

What's the trick ?
