My guess is that's not it, since he couldn't get anything to happen w/ starter fluid = no spark.
have you checked for spark? like putting a screwdriver in it and placing it against the valve cover. with my problem, i was getting spark.

had this happened to me like 2 weeks ago. car would turn but acted like no gas. it turned out that main pump just died. if your problem seems like a fuel issue, you could also have a clogged fuel filter.
