The 6-speed ZF from the Euro E34 M5 (1993+) will bolt in. You may need a custom driveshaft. I do not think that a 540i tranny (V8 block) will even come close.

You'll need a new custom drive shaft and custom fitted trans mounts. Plus some other related electronics hook up to get to work. The issue is cost, the trany will cost >$6k, install, figure 20hrs @ $100/hr at a good mechanic. Plus there'll be misc. costs for little stuff.
