Alex in S. Florida,
The information you were provided is incorrect. Much of the confusion is partly caused by an inaccuracy, in the Vin ranges, furthermore there were far more examples sent to the Canadian market. By the end of the E28 M5 production 134 examples were delivered to Canada, with 1236 examples sent to the United States. Perhaps the number you were given was confused with the 96 (DC98: South African-spec (RHD), 03/87-06/8896) examples that were sent to the South African market. I have posted the sales figures that Johnh referenced which I posted sometime ago. Again I would also like to point all owners to the BMW M Registry website and as the FAQ also explains the production information for the E28 M5, and I encourage everyone to share their car with the registry to answer these questions. E28 M5 Production began in October 1984. The cars were hand built in a separate BMW Motorsport facility. The bodyshells were taken from the main production line at Dingolfing to Preussenstrasse, where the painted body shells met the engines and transmissions. There is some suspicion as to being able to place any given E28 M5 in the total North American production, because of inconsistencies in the Vehicle Identification Numbers and build dates, as the production date relates to the body assembly. With this unique assembly process each M5 took almost a week to complete but it allowed European customers to order their cars with a wide array of options. The United States and Canadian specification cars were produced, by hand, to identical specification (Schwartz/ Natur and full leather appointed interior were standard.) The options list for United States specification cars remained short, as it included just heated seats, CD changer/ stacker and cellular phone with the addition of Black leather being an option for Canadian specification vehicles. This assembly process helped expedite the already slow process as the M5 appeared in United States and Canadian BMW Center showrooms in late 1987 and 1988 at a mere $45,500 MSRP.
