I have noticed a difference in resonant noise inside the passenger compartment on a 535i when I put tips on. Before tips it was loud, after I put them on (extended pipes about 3") the noise had greatly subsided. The noise was best described as booming, worst in the rear seat area, around 2000-2700RPM.

My M5 has the chromed tips, and I think it looks just fine. Since the kidney-grilles are chromed, the exhaust tips provide that touch of chrome on the rear.

The stock M5 exhaust is so quiet that I don't think you'll notice any difference.
