How to check steering linkage/wheel bearings? (archive)

Following up on a front wheel shimmy at 50 MPH, I had been told to check these parts. A mechanic told me that I had a tie rod end with some play but still within tolerances to the point that it did not require replacement. I checked all of them and could not find any slop in any of them. So is there an easy way to test them? Is any movement allowable? What about wheel bearings?
