So, i went through my Roundels (only back until about mid 99, and i have a bunch if missing issues) and i wrote down the date of the ad, the mileage, and the asking price for E28 M5s.

I put this data into excel and calculated that the average E28 m5 asking price is 15,600, and the average car has about 106,000 miles on it.

After that, I imported the data into GNUPLOT and made some interesting 3d graphs of price as a function of ad-date and mileage.

The graphs show some interesting and obvious conclusions. The price has generally been going down over time (big surprise). However, there's a good argument to stay away from hi mile M5s - they dont cost any less than low mile M5s. the asking price doesn't show a significant downward trend abvoe 100k miles, so any M5 with significantly more than that on the clock doesn't seem to be any cheaper than one with just over 100k miles on it. I.e., wait for a 100k mile M5, or talk the buyer down on a 150k mile M5, becuase the asking prices have been historically about the same.

The three graphs i have are based on incomplete data spanning about 2 years worth of roundels. If someone has a larger collection, or wants these graphs for a different model car, please email me and i can talk about the format i need the data in to do this stuff (its really simple, dont worry :)

id really like to find somoene with roundels going all the way back to 1988 so we could have a really complete price history of these cars. This is the sort of data (and these graphs and stats) we all want in the event the insurance company wants to try and total one of our cars for some BULLSHIT price (which they usually do :( )..
