The cam box does come off before you can remove the head bolts. No problem there. Biggest hassle is loosening the rear cover enough to get the rearmost camshaft caps off and the shafts out.

Is it possible to remove the cam box without removing the head from engine? I ask because the cam box is damaged on my spare low miles engine, but the head is perfect. I'd like to avoid replacing the head gasket if feasible.
