Where can you mount an oil temperature sender? (archive)

Hi Y'all,

If you're a regular on the non-M E28 message board, you know that I'm selling the gauge setup that I prototyped on my '86 535i (see the "BMW E28 Gauge Installation" folder). I know where to mount all the senders for an M30, but not for an S38. One of my customers has an E28 M5, but I don't know where to tell him that the oil temp sender should be mounted.

I took a look at a friend's E28 M5 the other day and saw that the oil filter housing has only one tapped location (for the idiot light) and I couldn't readily tell if there was anywhere else on the housing that could be tapped. I know the E34 M5 has an oil temp gauge, and I'm going to look at my Dad's '91 tomorrow to see how that is set up. Have any of you added an oil temperature gauge? How and where did you locate the sender? Did you have to resort to a drain-plug location? Can the E28 housing be tapped or would an E34 M5 housing be an alternative (albeit expensive)?

BTW, I've already searched the archives for this and didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm up to my ears with orders for the panel right now (85!) and am not taking any more for the time being, but when the level becomes manageable, I'll post on both E28 boards that I'm ready to take more orders.

Thanks in advance,
Shawn D.
