Great question. I also have a dead compressor and was wondering if I could put any compressor in its place or does the M5 system need to meet a certail spec ?

Philo.

Guys:

Hate to say it but you either can try and pick up a used compressor and take your chances or get a rebuilt one. They are not cheap. If you are going to go to that trouble I would replace the receiver dryer and oil (not that expensive) and convert to R134. The stuff is easier to get and much cheaper and will do a reasonable job of cooling the car down. There is some argument about which cools better on converted systems, R12 or R134. I have had good luck in Tucson with R134 on several older vehicles including the M5.
