I have a pre-purchase write-up at http://www.neilwerke.com. The most important thing is engine, tranny, interior cosmetics and rear self-levelling suspension. The rest is just more or less regular 5er stuff.
Low mileage cars are tough to come by and a well-maintained high-mileage one should be fine and cheap to acquire and the maintenance issues will be the same (some things have to be changed no matter what when you buy used). I think 200k miles is the practical limit on the motor before at least a partial rebuild becomes necessary so keep that in mind.
Pricing you can check http://www.traderonline.com as a reference, but it is GREATLY dependent on condition. I would guess a range of $5k-$12k for that mileage depending on condition.
