Valve adjustments (archive)

I just recently had the valves adjusted on my low mileage M5. Before the adjustment, the car made the ordinary engine noises, with no unusual "clacking" of the cams against the shims. We found six valves out of spec. with the most of those at .14. New shims were installed in the out of spec. valves. After the adjustment, a pronounced "clacking" sound could be heard. We opened her up again, rechecked ALL the valves, and found all to be in spec. One shim, however, in a valve that was adjsuted, was beveled on the edges--we didn't notice it going in. It was replaced.

The "clacking" is nowhere near as loud, but still noticeable mostly at idel. The engine sound is not quite the way it was before the adjustment was done.

Finally, after warm up, the clacking sound disappears.

I'm curious to hear the groups comments and thoughts. Thanks, Andrew
