Yeah, this kinda addresses my question, because i'm assuming the lay shaft is slowing down anyway as the revs drop, which should be just about right for an upshift. I guess I should work on my clutch skills for the hard downshifts though.

I always double clutch my downshifts (for fun & to save tranny wear), but never double-clutch an upshift. Is this really helpful in any way? It makes sense with a downshift since you are speeding up the input shaft, but you don't need to do that on an upshift. I also don't recall ever seeing race car drives double-clutch an upshift.
