What is the Correct Synthetic Transmission Fluid? (archive)

Does anyone have any experience with Redline MTL in an M5 transmission or other synthetic fluids?

I seem to recall a post somewhere that said some of the M5 transmissions don't like Redline MTL. I've been a regular user of MTL in my other BMW's with good results. But I just put it in my M5 (which is a relatively new car to me), and the M5 shifts worse with the MTL.

No big deal to try something else, but does anyone have a recommendation? I'm thinking of trying Valvoline synthetic gear oil.
