88 M5 tach and SI lights need pic of the batteries (archive)

Just bought an M5 and my tach is intermittant, first attack was to change the batteries. I found the originals gone and an external holder for two aa's. one was fully charged the other flat.replacing them did not fix the prob. I am susupcious the polarity is wrong. does anyone have a pic of how they shoud go?
Also what about the coding plug, if I jam it in and out the tach sometimes comes to life. What is it for?
next, how do I get at the actual SI board? the temp and fuel gause seem to be holding it all together, I cant get at the board to check for bad joints.
