I asked the question a year ago and was told that it was a factory setting for the electronic tach. I think it reads 13 on every 88 US M5.

Anybody have any idea what that little 13 means? Does it indeed refer to compression? I thought all S38 engines were high compression.

BEN!! WOW! YOU WIN! BMW NA was running a contest. Any M5 that came up with a little 13 inside the little hole wins a new E39 M5!!

OK, Here's the scoop. If you check the archives, you will see different opinions. Some say the US cars have a 13. Some say the setting is different for which motor you have (High or Low Compression). My M5 had a 13 and was vin 2875366.

Has anyone found the 'true' answer to this mystery?
