redline D4 ATF is too slippery for the synchros in the getrag 280. i had problems trying to mesh gears at higher rpms. MTL seems to work fine. i emailed Jim Blanton about the D4 ATF and he replied that he recommends MTL in ALL of his rebuilt transmissions. standard dino ATF also works fine. and of course if you want to do it 'right' use only BMW ATF. - jeff h
