1) Traditional rolling - some people use a baseball bat to roll the fenders, but I recommend that about as much as using sandpaper as a contraceptive device. The preferred way is to use a legitimate fender-rolling device that mounts to your hub and uses a polyurethane wheel on an arm to gently roll the metal. Such devices can be rented or purchased (Haweka makes a good one!). Heating the fender lip with a heat gun or strong hair dryer is recommended, but not absolutely necessary.
2) Shaving - I have done this on two E28s so far with excellent results. This involves actually cutting the fender lip away using an air-powered rotary cutting tool. Results are very clean if done carefully. You will need to protect the exposed metal surface afterwards, use a rust-converter primer/paint and then some regular paint on the edge.
