I am looking at implementing the city light option, a 5-watt bulb that sticks through the lamp itself,in my Hella quarts halogen headlamps (5.75 round high H1 lamp/ low H4 lamp) European vehicles are equipped with this feature as they did not have US-style amber parking lamps. I understand proper way in which the city lights should be wired. And If wired properly, during the event of a bulb malfunction on coming traffic will still see the approaching vehicle as a double track vehicle. Additionally it will make the font turn signals much clearer because they will now go "BRIGHT-off-BRIGHT-off" instead of "bright-dim-bright-dim" when the lights are on, as on European models. Because the city lights are useful in adverse conditions, as they show on coming motorists where the car is I feel that it is a worthwhile addition to the car. Especially on foggy days when the fog lights could be more properly used. The city lights are designed to be wired into the low beam lens, however I would like to place the city light in the high beam lens, as seen on most new BMWs. The inherent problem in doing so is that when the low beam headlights were switched on the city lights would presumably remain on and it would appear though as if four headlights were on. If anyone has any information as to how to wire the city light option so that the city light turns off when the blow beam headlamps are in use and only on when the lights are switched to position one I would appreciate any assistance.

Cheers,

You can more clearly see the implementation of the city light into the high beam lens as seen in “new(er)” BMWs in this photograph. It does not appear that the city light turns off when the low beam headlamps are in use.
